When was the last time you checked your washing machine hoses?
It would be wise to have a look at them because homes flood from bursting hoses quite often. A study from the Insurance Journal shows that more than 50% of water damage claims are related to washing machines broken water supply hoses. These incidents are also very costly, with the average insurance claim running to more than $8,000.
A quick inspection can help prevent a flood
Look for signs of deterioration, such as blisters, bulges, bubbles; cracks; unraveling; discoloration; bends or kinks, especially near the connections. Check also for moisture, drips, rust, or leaks around hoses and connections.
Replace defective or aging hoses
I recommend replacing the black rubber hoses with stainless-steel braided hose. These cost between $15 to $25 and are reinforced with a twisted, flexible steel mesh. You should always shut off the water valves at the washer when it’s not in use, and never leave home during a cycle. The hoses should be replaced every 5 years.
Replacing them is easy as unplugging your garden hose.
You will need a slip-joint plier, a bucket and a rag.
- Turn off both water shut off valves
- Start the washing machine and run it on fill cycle for a few second. That will empty the hoses.
- Pull the machine away from the wall.
- Unplug the machine and disconnect, using the plier, both hoses from the machine first and the water supply valves. This is where the bucket become handy.
- Screw the new hoses on your machine and on the valves matching the hot and cold connection. Screw them by hand and finish to tighten them a bit with the plier.
- Turn the water valves back on and check carefully for leaks or humidity. Keep the bucket close…
- Plug the machine back in and push it into place. You should leave 4 inches of space at the back of your washer.
In conclusion, you should check your hoses 4 times a year and replace them after 5 years of use.
